Win95/8 Tips & Tricks

Add your own help files
Platform: Win95/NT  User Level: Advanced
Windows 98 Help menus are helpful, but they don't always speak your language. You can put in your own two cents by annotating any topic. It's like pasting a sticky note right on it. Right-mouse click the window of an open topic and choose Annotate. Speak (type) your mind in the box that pops up and click Save. From now on, you'll see a little paper clip any time you open that topic. Click the paper clip to read your notes. To get rid of the note, open it and click the Delete button.

Put a restart icon on your desktop
Platform: Win95/NT  User Level: Advanced
Here's how to put a quick restart icon on your desktop

1 - Open up a text editor (eg, NotePad +)
2 - Type "@exit" in a new document window (without quotes)
3 - Save the file as "restart.bat" (batch file) in txt format
4 - Go to Windows explorer and right-click on the file that you just saved and choose properties. Click on the program tab, and the "Advance..." button. Check the box that says, "MS-DOS mode", and uncheck the "Warn before entering MS-DOS mode" box, click OK.
5 - Next to the "Advance..." button there is a "Change Icon..." button, click on it and choose an icon. Close window.
6 - There will be a shortcut file by the same name as the one you have created earlier, drag the shortcut to the desktop and you're done.

Another way to restart Windows quickly -- Go into the Start Menu and select --> Shut Down --> Restart the Computer. Hold down the Shift key and click OK.

Backup Associations:
Platform: Win95/NT  User Level: Advanced
Don't put up with this inconvenience; restore your preferred associations. It's a lot easier than you think, as long as you plan ahead. When you finally get Windows 95 or NT 4.0 set up to your liking, save those settings by using the Registry Editor. First start the Registry Editor, then select the folder labeled HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Choose Registry, Export Registry File. (The equivalent NT command is Save Key.) Then give the exported file a meaningful name--for example, Saved Associations.reg.
